Flexible Nib Variations - Casual / Gothic / Uncial - by Michael Kecseg

In this series of mini-workshops + weekly follow-up session for final exercise includes: Printable models and guide lines, Q&A session at the end of each session and recordings available after class.

If you have already practiced with your flexible nib and are looking to expand your repertoire of letter variations, these mini workshops are for you!

In this series of mini-workshops we will take the flexible nib used for Copperplate and use it to explore its potential and create new and exciting letterforms. I will guide you step by step to make the basic strokes, we will end up with an informal script that is modern but has the base of traditional letters. These highly original variations were created by calligrapher Michael Kecseg, and I greatly appreciate his generosity in allowing me to showcase his creations that I admire so much.

This series is composed of 3 mini workshops. In each session you will learn a lowercase alphabet with the following variations:

1. Session 1 (June 18) - Casual Script + 1hr follow up 
2. Session 2 (June 25) - Fraktur (Gothic) with flexible nib + 1hr follow up 
3. Session 3 (July 2) - Uncial with flexible nib + 1hr follow up 

Within each 3 hour live online session, and ending with Q&A, you will learn:

-Modulations and movements with the pen to create basic strokes.

-You will prepare the movements of your arm and hands to create the ideal pressure modulation for the construction of the letters.

-You will learn the bases, spacing, shapes and logic of each alphabet.

-You will learn step by step to build each letter of the lowercase alphabets. I will guide you and you can easily follow the ductus of each letter. The letters will help you create projects such as cards, pieces of art or implement some elements in other projects. There are endless possibilities!

Suggested Materials:

-A very flexible nib such as Leonardt main, hunt 56, guillot 303, guillot 404

-Straight or oblique cuff

-Sumi ink, Vermilion or walnut.

-High quality printing paper or semi-transparent cotton paper.

-Cotton colored paper as canson for a final exercise (optional)

Or, you can opt for the option that includes a kit with KOUS materials which contains:

-Hunt 56

-1 walnut shimmer ink 30ml

-Universal grid notebook

Previous experience with a flexible nib is suggested

Your kit will be sent to your address prior to the workshop, so there will be  registration deadline:

If you register after that date there is a high chance that your kit will not arrive in time for the class.
